ToggleAs a dietitian who creates meal plans for people taking GLP-1 medications like semaglutide and tirzepatide, Iโm always looking for ways to help my clients make healthy eating easier. Thatโs why I decided to test ChatGPT Projects, to see if it could help people plan their meals with more structure and less overwhelm.
The short answer? It works surprisingly well, but not as well as the ones I design for my patients.
In this post, youโll learn how to use ChatGPT to create your own GLP-1-friendly meal plans complete with recipes, shopping lists, and built-in flexibility. Youโll discover how to save your nutrition details once, reuse them for future plans, and refine meals to fit your taste, tolerance, and goals, just like I do for my patients.
Letโs do this.
Why Use Projects Instead of a Single Chat
Using Projects in ChatGPT is a total game-changer for meal planning, especially if youโre taking GLP-1 medications.
When you use a single chat, all the information you shareโyour medication, nutrition goals, and food preferencesโessentially disappears once the chat ends. So, every time you want a new meal plan, you have to start from zero.
Projects work differently. They allow you to store your personal details once, and ChatGPT will remember them every time you ask for a new plan. That means your calorie targets, protein goals, and favorite foods stay consistent, even when you request new recipes or meal variations.
Hereโs why that matters:
- It saves time: You donโt have to keep retyping your information every week.
- It keeps things consistent: Your plans will always match your stored nutrition framework.
- It grows with you: You can update your project as your appetite, goals, or medication dose changes.
- It keeps everything in one place: Your stored info, past plans, and updates all live togetherโorganized and easy to access.
Think of it as your GLP-1 nutrition headquarters: a single, organized space that helps you create new meal plans in minutes without the chaos of starting over.
Step 1: Create a Project for Your GLP-1 Nutrition Profile
Start a new project in ChatGPT and name it something like GLP-1 Meal Planner or My Nutrition Profile.
Projects let you store everything onceโyour medication, nutrition goals, food preferences, and scheduleโso you can create new meal plans in seconds.
Step 2: Create a Document to Upload to Your Project
Open a Word or Google document and label it โGLP-1 Nutrition Profile.โ This file becomes the foundation for your ChatGPT meal planning. Youโll find a blank template to download at the end of this post.
Personal Information
- Age, height, weight, and gender
These details help estimate your calorie and protein needs.
Set Your Nutrition Framework
GLP-1 medication are known to reduce appetite, which can make it harder to meet your nutrition needs. A balanced framework will help you stay nourished and energized.
I like using an online calculator for calories; everything else ChatGPT can do for you.
- Calories: Calculate your needs with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation
- Protein: 25โ30% of total calories
- Carbohydrates: 40โ45%, focusing on fiber-rich foods
- Fat: 25โ30%, mostly from healthy sources
- Fiber: โฅ 14 g per 1,000 calories
Your GLP-1 Profile
- Medication name and injection day
- Side effects or food tolerances (e.g., nausea, reflux)
- Notes for the day after your injection: do lighter meals or smoothies feel better than bigger meals?
Eating Pattern
- Meals per day: ___ meals + ___ snacks
- Meal timing (breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner)
- Meal prep routine (e.g., Sundays for 3 days)
- Time and repetition goals (e.g., โค 30 minutes, repeat favorites 2โ3 times per week)
Food Preferences
Add as many details as you want!
- Likes
- Dislikes
- Favorite cuisines
Shopping & Budget
- Stores (Costco, Aldi, Publix, etc)
- Weekly budget: $____ for ___ people
Cooking Lifestyle
Understanding your kitchen setup and habits helps ChatGPT create realistic, stress-free meal plans.
Include details like:
- Appliances available: list what you have on hand: stove, oven, air fryer, Instant Pot, blender, or microwave.
- Time available to cook: mention how much time you typically have for meals during the week (for example, 20โ30 minutes on weekdays, longer on weekends).
- Meal planning habits: note whether you like to meal prep, batch cook, or prefer quick, day-of cooking.
These small details help ChatGPT design meals that truly fit your schedule and kitchen routine.
Family Needs
- Kid-friendly meals ___ times per week
- Plan for ___ person(s)
Tip: Save this document outside ChatGPT for easy editing. When you make updates, upload the new version to your project.
Texture or Tolerance Notes
Foods or textures that are easy to tolerate (e.g., soups, cooked veggies, smoothies). Makes plans more comfortable on low-appetite or nausea days.
Notes for ChatGPT
Optional prompts or tone preferences. This gives ChatGPT your personality so it plans more naturally for you.
Example: โI prefer easy weekday meals and one fun recipe on the weekend.โ

Step 3: Ask for Your Plan
Upload your document, then prompt ChatGPT:
โCreate a 5-day GLP-1 meal plan with recipes, protein and fiber counts, prep tips, and a shopping list.โ
Youโll receive a customized plan with meals and recipes built around your needs. This is where ChatGPT meal planning really starts to shine.
Step 4: Refine for Flavor and Tolerance
Now that ChatGPT has created your first GLP-1 meal plan, personalize it, just like you would with your dietitian. If a meal doesnโt sound appealing or youโd prefer one of your favorites, simply ask ChatGPT to adjust it.
For example:
โRemove the shrimp stir-fry and add a chicken dish instead.โ
On days when your stomach feels more sensitive, request gentler options:
โUpdate the recipes with mild flavors, herbs, and sauces that are easy to digest.โ
ChatGPT will instantly update your plan and turn basic ideas into balanced, medication-friendly meals such as:
- Honey-Lime Shrimp and Rice Bowl
- Creamy Yogurt Parfait with High-Protein Granola
- Soft Salmon with Dill and Roasted Vegetables
Keep refining until the plan fits your appetite, taste, and comfort. The more feedback you provide, the better ChatGPT can tailor your next plan to your GLP-1 journey.
Step 5: Save, Export, and Reuse
Once youโre happy with your plan, input:
โExport my GLP-1 meal plan as a Word or PDF with recipes and a shopping list.โ
You can store multiple versions inside your project, like easy-digest options or family-friendly plans, and reuse them anytime.
Step 6: Adjust as Your Medication Changes
Your appetite and tolerance may shift as your dosage changes. Keep your project updated so ChatGPT can adapt automatically.
Try prompts like:
โAdd more fiber-rich foods and include prunes. I am experiencing constipation.โ
โFocus on soft meals this week, Iโm experiencing nausea.โ
Dietitian Tips for GLP-1 Meal Planning
No matter what version you use, these simple tips will help you stay nourished and comfortable:
- Prioritize protein: supports lean muscle and satiety
- Add fiber: reduces constipation
- Stay hydrated: sip fluid throughout the day
- Meal prep smart: smaller portions, 4-6 a day
- Smoothies and yogurt-based breakfasts and snacks work well for low-appetite days
- Track what feels good: ChatGPT can remember your notes for next time.
A Dietitianโs Take
ChatGPT Projects wonโt replace individualized care, but it makes balanced eating simpler for anyone taking GLP-1 medication. When structure meets flexibility, it becomes less about restriction and more about creating a pattern of eating that truly supports your health.
